Three programs, three different needs

In Quebec high schools, "English class" does not mean the same thing for everyone. In a French school, students follow the core English as a Second Language program (ESL) or, if they are more advanced, Enriched ESL (EESL). In an English school, they take English Language Arts (ELA), a first-language course built around literature and analysis. A bored enriched student and a core student who is afraid to speak need very different practice.

The free first class helps us place your teen: their program, oral fluency, comprehension and writing. After that, we follow what happens in class and prepare upcoming evaluations. Our guide on improving in English as a second language explains the competencies and the habits that help at home. Our English tutoring page covers every age, including conversation for adults.

What we cover

From Secondary 1 to Secondary 5

1

Oral interaction

Give an opinion, react to other people's ideas and keep a discussion moving, without reciting a memorized text.

2

Reading response

Understand a text that is read, watched or heard, then reuse it in a new task: summary, reaction, opinion piece.

3

Writing

Plan, draft, revise: a clear position, structured paragraphs and fewer structures copied from French.

4

Enriched ESL (EESL)

Longer texts, literature, demanding listening tasks and argumentation: we keep strong students challenged.

5

English Language Arts

For English schools: analysis of novels and poems, analytical essays and literary vocabulary.

6

Secondary 5 exam

Preparation for the Sec 5 ministry exam in English, based on the program your teen follows, with practice tasks.

By level

From Secondary 1 to CEGEP

In Secondary 1 and 2, the goal is mostly fluency: speak more, build vocabulary, strengthen verb tenses. In Secondary 3 and 4, texts get longer and argumentation takes centre stage. In Secondary 5, we prepare the ministry exam and what comes next.

At CEGEP, English is still part of the program: English courses are included in general education, and the starting level is often set by a placement. Arriving with solid skills makes those courses easier and more useful. Our guide to the high school to CEGEP transition helps you plan ahead.

For families

English schools, French schools and newcomers

Some of our families have a child in an English school who needs to go deeper in ELA; others have a child in a French school who already speaks English at home and is bored in core ESL. Newcomer families sometimes need both English and French support at once. We place each student where they actually are, and a short written report after every class keeps you informed. For the French side, see our Secondary 5 French page.

How it works

Getting started is simple

  1. 1

    Pick a time

Choose the subject and a free time slot. We assign a qualified tutor.

  2. 2

    Free first class

The tutor assesses the level and finds what is blocking.

  3. 3

    Follow the progress

After every class, a short report arrives by email and in your parent space.

What is the difference between ESL and EESL?

ESL is the core English as a Second Language program in French schools. EESL is the enriched program for students who are already comfortable, with longer texts and more demanding tasks. We adapt classes to either one.

My child speaks English at home but gets average marks. Why?

Speaking fluently is only one part of the mark. Reading response and writing require structure, a clear position and careful revision, which can be taught. We focus on those tasks.

Do you prepare the Sec 5 ministry exam in English?

Yes, based on the program your teen follows, core or enriched. We work with tasks similar to the exam and review oral, comprehension and writing skills.

Do you tutor English Language Arts in English schools?

Yes. ELA is a first-language course focused on literary analysis and essay writing, and our tutors cover it from Secondary 1 to 5.

Are classes fully in English?

As much as possible, with explanations in French or Persian when that helps understand a rule.

The first class is free. Let's see together where your child stands.
