Homework help · Elementary
In elementary school, each cycle brings its own challenges: learning to read, mastering times tables, understanding fractions. A patient tutor helps your child do their homework and build good habits, in English, French or Persian.

Quebec elementary school is divided into three two-year cycles, and homework is not hard in the same way at 6 and at 11. In Grade 1, a sheet of French sounds can end in tears; in Grade 5, it is more often word problems and fractions. Our elementary homework help adapts to your child's age: concrete explanations and breaks for the youngest, then more and more independence as they grow.
This page is about elementary school. For an overview that also covers high school and CEGEP, see our homework help page. For a specific subject, see math tutoring or French tutoring.
Grades 1 and 2: sounds, syllables, reading aloud and first spelling words, with plenty of repetition.
Numbers up to 100 and beyond, tens and ones, addition and subtraction with hands-on materials.
Grades 3 and 4: learn the multiplication tables in small blocks, then use them for division and problems.
Longer texts, comprehension questions, dictations and conjugation of common verbs.
Grades 5 and 6: fractions, decimals and percentages, often the first real wall in math.
Reading, writing and math in June: we build stamina and practise justifying answers well before the exams.
Homework goes better when it happens at the same time and place every day, with the TV off and the tablet put away. Look at the school planner together, start with the hardest task and stop before fatigue takes over. For math, our guide on helping your child with math gives simple ideas for weeknights.
For the youngest, a full hour is often too long: in Grades 1 and 2 the tutor splits the hour into short activities with small breaks, and you can mention it when you book. In Cycle 3, our fractions guide explains the steps, and our page on the Grade 6 ministry exams describes the June exams, which counted for 20 % of the assessed competencies in 2025-2026.
Many Montreal families have a child in a French elementary school but do not speak French at home. It is one of the most common reasons parents call us. The tutor works with your child in French, the language of their homework, and explains to you in English or Persian what was done. After every class, a short written report arrives by email and in your parent space, so you know what is solid and what still needs practice, without having to check the French homework yourself.
