What the exam covers

The exam covers 1840 to today, the period studied in Secondary 4. Students answer questions using a file of documents (texts, maps, tables, images). It counts for 50% of the result for the competency assessed.

Each question asks for a specific skill: placing events in time, establishing facts, describing, comparing, finding causes and consequences, making connections. A student who recognizes the skill being asked already knows what to write.

1

Chronology

Placing major events and periods from 1840 to today, in the right order.

2

Documents

Reading a text, a map or a table and taking out exactly the information asked.

3

Causes and consequences

Explaining why a change happened and what it led to, with precise facts.

4

Comparing and describing

Describing a historical reality and comparing two points of view or two periods.

Week by week

Avoid these

The most common mistakes

  • Answering from memory without using the documents.
  • Mixing up cause and consequence.
  • Ignoring a document's date when placing it in time.
  • Vague answers with no precise fact.
  • Studying only dates, not the links between events.
