Ministry exam · ST and AST

The Secondary 4 science exam, one topic at a time.

The theory part of the Science and Technology (ST) or Applied Science and Technology (AST) exam takes 3 hours. Lots of topics, but a simple way to review them.

What the exam covers

The ministry exam covers the theory part of Secondary 4 science. It counts for 50% of the result for the competency assessed; the other half comes from the school. ST and AST students write on the same day, each their own exam.

Questions mix the four areas of the program and often ask the student to explain something or do a short calculation. Students who are strong in math are not always comfortable: scientific vocabulary matters too.

1

The material world

Properties of matter, solutions and concentration, chemical reactions, electricity and magnetism.

2

The living world

Ecology: populations, communities, ecosystems and how ecosystems change.

3

The Earth and space

Lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, biogeochemical cycles and energy resources.

4

The technological world

Mechanical and electrical engineering: links, guiding, motion transmission and circuits.

Week by week

A realistic prep plan

Two 60-minute sessions a week with the tutor, plus 2 or 3 short sessions alone. That is exactly the pace of the Blitz packages.

  1. Week 1List every topic of the year and tick the ones that are not understood.
  2. Week 2Material world: formulas (concentration, Ohm's law, power) and calculation drills.
  3. Week 3Living world and Earth and space: draw the cycles and explain the vocabulary out loud.
  4. Week 4Technological world: diagrams of links and transmissions, electrical circuits.
  5. Week 5Timed questions from term exams, a review of mistakes, then rest the day before.
Avoid these

The most common mistakes

  • Memorizing definitions without being able to use them.
  • Forgetting units in calculations (g/L, ohms, watts).
  • Mixing up the carbon and nitrogen cycles.
  • Skipping the technological world because it looks easy.
  • Reading the question too fast and answering something else.

Exam Blitz packages

An intensive boost, right before the exam

The same hourly rate as usual for the level, with a small discount, at a pace of 2 sessions a week. Sessions are booked in your parent space, with the same tutor.

Paid online at purchase (Stripe). Sessions already given are not refunded. A session cancelled at least 24 hours ahead stays as a credit in your space. The first class is still free.

When is the Secondary 4 science exam in 2027?

According to the ministry's official schedule, the Science and Technology and Applied Science and Technology exams are on June 16, 2027, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. A session is also held on January 20, 2027 for some students.

How much is the exam worth?

In Secondary 4, the ministry exam counts for 50% of the result for the competency assessed. The other half comes from the school.

My child is in AST. Is it the same content?

Both exams are on the same day, but AST puts more weight on technological applications. The tutor adapts the plan to the student's exam.
