What the exam covers

The Secondary 4 ministry exam assesses one competency, Uses mathematical reasoning. It counts for 50% of that competency's result; the other half comes from the school. Secondary 4 math is also required for the high school diploma (DES).

Each sequence has its own exam and its own date. TS and SN students write on the same day, CST students one week later. The structure is the same: multiple choice, short answers and application problems where the work you show is graded.

1

Algebra and functions

Functions, equations and inequalities, systems of equations. In SN and TS, quadratic functions and factoring take up a lot of room.

2

Geometry and trigonometry

Metric and trigonometric relations in triangles, the sine law, similar and congruent figures. In CST, geometry carries a lot of weight.

3

Statistics and probability

Two-variable distributions, correlation and the regression line, plus probability depending on the sequence.

4

Showing your work

Section C is marked with a grid: conjecture, concepts, reasoning, structure and justification. A right answer with no work earns little.

Week by week

A realistic prep plan

Two 60-minute sessions a week with the tutor, plus 2 or 3 short sessions alone. That is exactly the pace of the Blitz packages.

  1. Week 1Diagnosis: redo a term exam from this year and sort every mistake by chapter.
  2. Week 2The two weakest chapters, with short multiple choice and short answer drills.
  3. Week 3Functions and algebra: one topic per session, always ending with a full problem.
  4. Week 4Geometry and trigonometry, then statistics: write every solution as on exam day.
  5. Week 5Timed application problems, 2 or 3 per session, marked with the grid.
  6. Week 6One full exam in 3 hours, a last look at recent mistakes, then rest the day before.
Avoid these

The most common mistakes

  • Writing only the final answer in section C.
  • Forgetting units or a final sentence that actually answers the question.
  • Mixing up the sine law and right-triangle trig ratios.
  • Poor time management: spending 30 minutes on one problem.
  • Reviewing only the topics you already like instead of the ones that weigh most in your sequence.

Exam Blitz packages

An intensive boost, right before the exam

The same hourly rate as usual for the level, with a small discount, at a pace of 2 sessions a week. Sessions are booked in your parent space, with the same tutor.

Paid online at purchase (Stripe). Sessions already given are not refunded. A session cancelled at least 24 hours ahead stays as a credit in your space. The first class is still free.

When is the Secondary 4 math exam in 2027?

According to the ministry's official schedule, the TS and SN exam is on June 11, 2027 and the CST exam on June 18, 2027, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. A January session is held on January 21, 2027 for some students. Always confirm with the school.

How much is the exam worth?

It counts for 50% of the result for the competency Uses mathematical reasoning. The other half comes from school assessments during the year.

When should my child start reviewing?

Six weeks ahead is a good start, with two sessions a week. A student with gaps from Secondary 3 should start earlier.

Is a Blitz enough?

A Blitz targets weak spots right before the exam. It does not replace a year of work, but it helps a lot when the student already knows where they get stuck.

Are classes online or at home?

In person in Montreal depending on tutor availability, or live online anywhere in Quebec.

The first class is free. Let's see together where your child stands.
