Bilingual families, very specific needs

Many West Island families live mostly in English, and a lot of children attend an English school or a French immersion program. Yet French is required everywhere in Quebec, in high school, at CEGEP and at work. Our tutors are comfortable in both languages and help your child close the gap between the French they understand when listening and what they are expected to produce in writing.

In math, the needs are the same as anywhere in Quebec: the Secondary 4 ministry exam, choosing between CST, TS and SN, then Calculus I at CEGEP. The twist is that a student may learn math in English and later switch to French courses, or the other way around, and the tutor bridges the two vocabularies. Classes are held online anywhere in the West Island.

West Island schools, CEGEPs and cities

Good to know before choosing a tutor

The West Island includes Montreal boroughs such as Pierrefonds-Roxboro and L'Île-Bizard-Sainte-Geneviève, as well as separate cities like Pointe-Claire, Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Kirkland, Beaconsfield and Dorval. Online classes are available everywhere. In-person classes are only possible in the boroughs that are part of Montreal, and depend on tutor availability.

English schools are mostly part of the Lester B. Pearson School Board, known for its French immersion programs, while French schools belong to the Centre de services scolaire Marguerite-Bourgeoys. For CEGEP, John Abbott College and Cégep Gérald-Godin are the two colleges in the area. Our article on the move from high school to CEGEP helps you prepare for that step.

Do you come to our home in Pointe-Claire or Dollard-des-Ormeaux?

Pointe-Claire and Dollard-des-Ormeaux are separate cities from Montreal, so classes there are held live online with the tutor. In-person classes are possible in Montreal boroughs such as Pierrefonds-Roxboro, depending on tutor availability.

What about Pierrefonds or Île-Bizard?

Those areas are part of Montreal. An in-person class at home or in a library is possible if a tutor is available nearby. If not, online classes are always an option.

My child is in French immersion and losing confidence. What do you do?

We start from the texts and instructions used in class, work on understanding before speed, and the tutor can explain in English when a concept is stuck before switching back to French.

Can you help a John Abbott student with Calculus I?

Yes. The tutor follows the course outline in English, with exam-style practice, for Calculus I, Calculus II or Linear Algebra.

How much does it cost?

$35 an hour for elementary, $45 for high school and $55 for CEGEP. The first class is free, with no contract and no registration fee. Packages of 8 and 12 classes save 5% and 10%.

The first class is free. Let's see together where your child stands.
